Festival of Bouquets

We have a new annual festival added to the official calendar, the Festival of Bouquets! We realized that after this many years, we still didn't have a proper spring festival and decided it should also coincide with 3weeks4dreamwith (an annual site wide celebration that both celebrates dreamwidth's anniversary and promotes activity, running from April 25th to May 15th).

So what is the Festival of Bouquets?

It is an annual celebration of the scents and flavors of spring! While it is officially a Capital holiday, all lands are allowed to participate and put their own twist on it. It runs from the last week of Aprilis (April) until mid Maia (May), but like all holidays, you can post for it at any time.

Official details are intentionally light at the moment, as we want you to have a lot of leeway with it, but there is an emphasis on flowers and garlic & onion type vegetables; the churches & their schools have their own related activities, despite it not being a religious holiday; and there is a festival Queen & Princess competition.

If you are looking for more celebration ideas and inspiration for the festival in the Capitol or you own lands:

It's a festival celebrating scents, what does Spring smell like for your people? Is there a local incense merchant? Do you have someone who makes or luxuriates in floral oils?

Is there a local bonfire?

What flowers are in bloom?

You could work with the themes of fertility, sexual desires, lusting, pinning, love, the beginning of summer, the end of spring, warmth coming, celebrating, returning light, & days lengthening, to name a few.

Do certain colors play into your celebrations? (Red, white, pink, green, & yellow, might be good choices, if you're stuck)

What are people eating? What produce is in season? What are they baking? Are there cakes and/or special sweets? Is there an emphasis on dairy?

Do your people have any special seed related rituals?

Ribbons, ribbons everywhere!

Are they planting bulbs?

Is your local candle maker completely overwhelmed over the demand for red candles?

Are they excited about the local dance?

Who is out making flower crowns?

For some people, foraging is important to their way of life. During the festivities, are there guided tours for those wanting to dabble in it? Are people unhappy about it?

Do you have people who have a ritual bath this time of year?

Who's admiring the flowers starting to bloom?

Are people taking advantage of the change in weather by taking their meals outside?

Are people making faerie offerings?

What does gathering flowers & greenery look like for your people? What are they doing with them?

Do you have someone who is excited about being the festival Queen or Princess? Does your own land have a similar contest that includes a male companion as well?

Are there any theatrical/street/puppet show performances where you are?

Celebrate hares/rabbits

Celebrate goats

Have a dramatic releasing of the hares/rabbits & goats

Celebrate beans

Throw beans at people for good luck

Do your people have all night celebrations? Is there someone absolutely appalled at what the city spends on torches every year to light these night time activities?

Who is having banquets and what do they look like?

Bless the cattle & livestock

Do your people create devotions to the Virgin Mary with things like artwork or school skits? Are people putting flower crowns on the heads of her statues (if they have them)?

Do your people celebrate the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker?

Does anyone make baskets of sweets & flowers and leaves them anonymously on their neighbors' doorsteps?

Is there a tradition of leaving roses or rice (or seeds or beans or other flowers) in the shape of a heart at the house of their beloved in front of a door or window?

Does anyone run into the local body of water naked at sunrise?

Is there a special place people gather morning dew from to wash their face for enhanced beauty?

Do they give bunches of lily of the valley to their loved ones?

Any specific garlic/onion/scallion/leeks traditions?

Dragon Fest is Here!

Dragon Fest is our annual celebration of Madrona’s creator, cheshirejin, who passed away several years ago. The holiday coincides with Appreciate a Dragon Day (January 16), and lasts until the end of January.

However, since this is not a special event hosted by a user, but an addition to our holiday calendar, it is open ended like everything else. It would be lovely if you posted something this month, but at anytime during the year would be great.

For now, as long as it conforms to the community rules, how you and your lands chose to celebrate this holiday is up to you. We, the mods, wrote up a little blurb from the archive for it that applies to the Capital here. It is also at the main comm.

Fun ways your people might celebrate Dragon Fest:
- Telling stories
- Knitting or otherwise creating small creatures
- Parades
- Puppet shows
- Costumes
- Celebrating lizards in some fashion
- Anything really

This is a festival that started as a way to get children interested in reading and grew to be an excuse to celebrate and create chaos. Use that spirit as your guide.

New Policy: Town Ghosting

New Policy: Town Ghosting

This policy has not been fleshed out yet, but we promised more transparency of what is going on behind the scenes.

While we don’t have the exact details worked out, we would like to enact a town ghosting policy. Essentially, what this would mean is that after a claimed square as has been abandoned or inactive for a certain number of years, it would be up for graps once again.

Because everything posted at Madrona becomes part of the world lore, we would make an info page for each ghosted land, keeping its history intact, and it would be up to the new owner to continue with what the land was already doing or come up with some sort of catastrophic event that would change it. The rules for the catastrophic event would require that the event only effect the square in question and we mods would like it if you ran it by us, before you enacted it.

Before we would ghost a claim, we would do our best to contact the owner of the claim beforehand. People will also be allowed to voluntarily ghost their claims.

A Quick and Dirty Guide to Town Building

So, you have claimed your square, now what?

While you have a lot of leeway as to what you can do with your square (remember, your square is roughly the same size as the state of New Hampshire), most people start with a single town/city/village.

Still stuck? Here are some things to consider:

1) How, when, and why did your town form?
Ex: Have they been there since before the fall? Were they wanderers that found a good water source and decided to stay put?

2) What is the population makeup and density?
Ex: The smallest land in Madrona currently has a population of 2 people. We have a land that only the elderly and too unwell to travel take up permanent residence, while the rest of this residence spend almost their entire lives traveling. Licentia, the city, has a relatively young population that is constantly in flux.

3) How do people make a living there?
Ex: Is there a primary industry your town relies on? Is it very insular and self-sufficient leading to a variety of employment opportunities? Are they insular and self-sufficient because they are a commune?

4) What does housing look like?

5) Do they have shops? And if so, what kind?

6) How and from where do they get food and clothing?

7) Where is their water source?

8) Is there a place for medical treatment and/or supplies?

9) How do they do their laundry?

10) What do they do if something needs repaired?

11) Are there eateries?

12) Are there libraries? What does education look like?

13) What kind of government does your city have?

14) Do they get mail? How?

15) Are there some kind of emergency services?

16) What do they do for waste management?

17) What level of technology are they at?

18) What does trade look like?

19) Relevant cultural, political, and/or religious influence or affiliations?

Having trouble coming up with a name?
Most cities/towns/villages, regardless of language, use the naming convention of naming themselves after relevant people, local geography, or descriptors. You don’t have to use this convention, but it might help park something if you are stuck.

While answering these questions, please keep in mind the climate, geography, and general location of your square, and where you are plotting your city/town/village in your square. If might be a little odd if your town that relies on selling tropical plants is located in the snowy mountains. Though if you have an explanation for that, we’ll take it.

Welcome to year three of Madrona's Dragon Fest! It coincides with Appreciate a Dragon Day (January 16). It's our celebration of cheshirejin we've been trying to organize for the last couple years.

Since this is not a special event hosted by a user, but an addition to our holiday calendar, it is open ended like everything else. It would be lovely if you posted something this month, but at anytime during the year would be great.

For now, as long as it conforms to the community rules, how you and your lands chose to celebrate this holiday is up to you. We, the mods, wrote up a little blurb from the archive for it that applies to the Capital here. It is also at the main comm.

If you have an alternate name idea than “Dragon Fest,” or any other ideas, let us know.

Remember, given the rules of Madrona, magic and magic creatures cannot actually be real, but your people can believe they are real or maybe there is an actual creature roaming your lands that is being interpreted as a monster – like an animal that isn't native to the area that your people have never seen before (or hadn't at the time the legend started) or an animal that against all odds managed to survived to adulthood with a genetic admornality your people don't understand for examples – could be the basis of said myths. Let your imaginations run wild and share with us! Details here.

Do they observe the young people shaking their heads knowing the mistakes they are about to make? Are their lives busy and full? Tell us!

Starting in January, information on these two fests will be posted at the info comm so that they maybe revisited by anyone in the future who missed out and still wants to participate.

allbingo has three events going on this month. They are going there annual amnesty bingo where you are encouraged to finish any bingos you may have left unfinished this year. There is also a Winter Fest which is about all things winter and the host encourages you to make a tree shaped bingo pattern and there is a Lexember Challenge, which is better explained by the host themselves, if you follow the link, but essentially, you make up new words. This could be a handy exercise for Madrona.

fffc is doing an advent calendar challenge. Each day, a new post goes up with that day's prompts and participants post their stories in the comments section and add their ideas for the next day's prompts. It's a few days in now, but there is an amnesty from the 25th - 31st to catch up on any missed days.

All over the world there are holiday creatures and monsters. It would make sense that some of these creatures have persisted into the time of Madrona. Maybe even some new ones have popped up. We are challenging you to come up with your own holiday creature/monster/cryptid or legend of winter or winter holiday in your land or the Madrona era version of an existing one.

Remember, given the rules of Madrona, magic and magical creatures cannot actually be real, but your people can believe they are real or maybe there is an actual creature roaming your lands that is being interpreted as a monster – like an animal that isn't native to the area that your people have never seen before (or hadn't at the time the legend started) has moved in or an animal that, against all odds, managed to survive to adulthood with a genetic abnormality your people don't understand, for examples – could be the basis of said myths.

A non-exhaustive list of current holiday creatures out and about in the world: Krampus, Lussi, The Karakoncolos, The Kallikantzaroi, Frau Perchta, The Yule Lads, Jólakötturinn (The Christmas Cat), Gryla, Straggele, Mari Lwyd, La Befana, The Grinch, The Tomten, The Grither...

Okay, I threw some current pop culture in there too, but what creatures from our movies and TV have gone on to be myth and legend in the time of Madrona, their origins long lost?

Your story could take many forms; children teasing each other that the great boogie boo is going to eat them because of their dirty socks, the origins of your creatures, a great ritual done to appease your land's creature, etc.

And remember, any media is applicable, so if instead of a fic, you instead decided to do art or write a holiday song or whatever, run with it.

Let your imaginations run wild and share with us!

Welcome to Winter Fest 2021!

The rules are simple. Below are 28 prompts. Pick 4. Make a 2x2 bingo card. Achieve a bingo.

That's it!

Remember, a 2x2 card only requires 2 fills to make a bingo, but if you want to do all 4 prompts to make a blackout, feel free! bingo card generator.

You can do as many cards as you want.

You can make a bigger card if you want.

A note about the prompts: While the prompts are based around the holiday in the capital, they can be used for any land. I also tried to honor the geographic location of Madrona when making the prompts. The capital is in what is currently France, so prompts draw from what I could find on Christmas in France. Below the prompt list, under the cut, are cut and pasted chunks of some of the things I found with links to where I found them to help give context and explain some of the prompts. Madrona as a kingdom is also essentially Catholic, even if some lands have their own unique religions, so that is somewhat reflected in the prompts as well. You can, as always, write the prompts however they speak to you. Have fun.

Oh, and you don't have to write your fills! As will everything else at Madrona, all media is allowed.

Madrona Winter Holiday Fest 2021

For my madrona_project peeps:
The holidays are upon us and for the last 12 years we have always struggled to make a holiday event happen. Right now, we have the school fall festival and autumn table to play with. We were thinking we should continue to keep things simple, that would take place over December and January, yes both months. And yes, it will overlap with Sinterklaas, New Year's, and Dragon Fest. Those are not canceled.

These are the current options:

(1) I make a public 5x5 bingo card with prompts that are very specific to Madrona for everyone to play with

(2) I make a list of prompts very specific to Madrona for everyone to make their own 2x2 bingo cards

(3) I make a 10 prompt table of prompts very specific to Madrona

Which would you prefer?

With only 3 or 4 of us currently active, it does not make sense to try to run an exchange or a larger event like the Queen's Ball again at this time. (Though if you missed out on the Queen's Ball when we did it, you can revisit it or anything else ever hosted at Madrona in the past, like always.)

For the duration of 2021, we are also hosting a Matriarch Fest and a Respect Your Elders Fest. (Thank you to those who have already posted something!)

The Matriarch Fest is in honor of Betty White's 99th birthday. Who are the matriarchs in your land(s)? Are they celebrated as they should be? Now is the time!

The Respect Your Elders Fest deals with an often over looked part of world building; what are your elderly populations doing? Most fics focus on the young and ignore the lives of the elders of the group, whatever age group that might be in your land. Are they revered? Do they observe the young people shaking their heads knowing the mistakes they are about to make? Are their lives busy and full? Tell us!

Also, semi-Madrona wide, Michaelmas begins at the end of the month. It's a church holiday apart of the Church of the Holy Roman Emperor's calendar.

The Respect Your Elders Fest deals with an often over looked part of world building; what are your elderly populations doing? Most fics focus on the young and ignore the lives of the elders of the group, whatever age group that might be in your land. Are they revered? August/Sextilis Holidays

Vine Fest
From the 15th of Quintilis until the end of Sextilis.

For six weeks we celebrate all things from the vine.

Festival events will include a livestock show and sale, many art, craft and food booths, wine, beer, live music, and dancing in the market square with a bonfire each night for the duration.
Daytime festivities will include puppet shows, frog jumping competitions and many contests of speed and skill for the kids. On the final day we will have the Queen's parade followed by the official tasting for the cooking competition. Yearly theme TBA.

Shark Week and Shark Fest were actually in July this year, but it is sometimes also in August. We think of it more a simply a summertime celebration at this point. With all the sailors, adventurers, and pirates in Madrona (or wannabes of those things), it seems an appropriate occasion to mark.

The other is the second annual Non-Sexual Intimacy Bingo. A more accessible version of it's prompt lists are here

And while the annual Winterfest in July, hosted by your Madrona mods, is technically closed for the year, Allbingo has an open ended due date policy, as do we, so you are more than welcome to still participate. There is even a generic banner for those who finished outside July. Or maybe you just want to get a head start on the winter season and try to beat the heat.

There are so many things going on in May, it's kind of frightening.

It's Mental Health Awareness month. A topic that is near and dear to your mods' hearts. It's also an excellent topic for writing, especially when handled with sensitivity and care.

#MonthofMeh, this is technically a fest for the Gudetama fandom, but you could expand it to Madrona by celebrating your favorite misanthrope characters. Or something about eggs, since Gudetama is an egg.

MerMay is all over the place. It started as daily mermaid art challenge with prompt lists on Instagram, but seems to have expended into an overall mermaid fest. Considering we have sailors, pirates, coastal lands, and an island that worships mermaids (looking at you Isle of Mer), why not?

MeTV is once again celebrating MAYberry. This is a month long celebration of anything even remotely related to the Andy Griffith Show to cash in on the pun. While at Madrona we do not allow fanfiction, considering the show itself, you could do a sort of homage to the show, if you wanted. The squares are large, does one of yours have a small wholesome town where nothing all that exciting happens? Do you have a land with a kind widower sheriff and/or bumbling deputy? Is there a spinster aunt who worries about her nephew and his son who lives with her? Is the gangly, bumbling deputy romantically involved with a woman way out of his league and no one can figure out why? Perhaps instead of something inspired by The Andy Griffith Show/Mayberry, you would like to do the antithesis there of. We take inspiration where we can get it.

May is also the Merry Month of Masturbation. There is plenty of fun to have with this theme.

STEMZ stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Zetetics, including both practical and academic branches -- fields where people often get pushed out. The pipeline leaks because people often have miserable experiences in these fields and prefer leaving to remaining miserable. If your fandom or original setting has groups (e.g. mutants) or fields (e.g. warp technology) with similar problems that are not listed, feel free to add them! There are ways to address the problems, and storytelling is one of them, so let's stick some corks in it. \o/ A difficult, but not impossible challenge for storytelling in Madrona. Also, Allbingo has no deadlines.

New Year's

Welcome to year two of Madrona's Dragon Fest! We tried to coincide it with Appreciate a Dragon Day (January 16). It's our celebration of cheshirejin we've been trying to organize for the last couple years.

Since this is not a special event hosted by a user, but an addition to our holiday calendar, it is open ended like everything else. It would be lovely if you posted something this month, but at anytime during the year would be great.

For now, as long as it conforms to the community rules, how you and your lands chose to celebrate this holiday is up to you. We, the mods, wrote up a little blurb from the archive for it that applies to the Capital here. It is also at the main comm.

If you have an alternate name idea than “Dragon Fest,” or any other ideas, let us know.

Your mods are also huge fans of Betty White. Why is this relevant you ask? Because she turned 99 this month and this has inspired us to do a matriarch fest this year. Who are the matriarchs in your land(s)? Are they celebrated as they should be? Now is the time! More details to come.

To all of our members, we hope you had as joyous time as possible celebrating however you celebrate (or don't).

It's been a tough year for everyone, your mods included.

We have missed a few newsletters here and there, but we are still working in the background and dedicated to keeping this place going.

If you have the time and inclination, we'd love to see your Sinterklaas, winter, and New Year's Eve creations. (Or anything else you would like to share.) And don't forget, New Year's and Dragon Fest are just around the corner.

Wool Dying and Weaving

I had this saved for winterfest in July stuff, but this video gives a good visual overview of at least one technique of making a cape/clothing; starting with raw wool, going through carting, spinning, dyeing, and weaving. I'm not sure where this was made exactly, but the techniques are (ones of many) viable for use in Madrona. Video is not in English.

What creatures lurk in the wilds of, well, The Wildes? What scary stories do Castus tell around the campfire? Now, given the rules of the comm, these creatures can't actually be real, but let's give Madrona some monsters!
